OpenAI “Spud” rumor check: will it replace GPT-5.4 Pro?

Spud, by contrast, mostly appears in third-party writeups, Reddit discussions, LinkedIn speculation, Medium posts and a feature-request thread in the OpenAI Developer Community. Those sources show the rumor exists; they do not prove a product launch or a replacement plan.

Verdict: unconfirmed, not a model-picker fact

The strongest fact-check reading is: Spud is an unverified name, not a confirmed ChatGPT model option. In the OpenAI API, Help Center and product materials cited here, there is no public model named Spud. The official names you can verify are the GPT-5.3/GPT-5.4 labels OpenAI uses in ChatGPT and the GPT-5.4/GPT-5.4 pro labels used for API documentation.

That also means the claim that Spud will replace GPT-5.4 Pro is not supported by official evidence. OpenAI may replace or retire models, but there is no cited OpenAI announcement tying Spud to GPT-5.4 Pro.

Where the Spud rumor is coming from

The current Spud conversation is mainly a rumor chain, not a documentation trail. Some third-party articles describe Spud as a next frontier model or as a possible GPT-5.5/GPT-6 candidate; social posts speculate that it could take over from GPT-5.4; forum and feature-request pages discuss “SPUD” as if a release were coming.

Those sources are useful for understanding why people are asking the question, but they are not the same as an OpenAI model announcement, Help Center release note or API model page. For launch facts, the stronger signals would come from OpenAI’s Model Release Notes, ChatGPT Release Notes or developer documentation.

What OpenAI has actually confirmed

OpenAI’s Help Center says that when a user selects Instant in ChatGPT, ChatGPT can automatically decide whether to use GPT-5.3 Instant or GPT-5.4 Thinking for the request. OpenAI Academy materials also use the public labels GPT-5.3 Instant, GPT-5.4 Thinking and GPT-5.4 Pro.

The same Help Center material says GPT-5 Instant and GPT-5 Thinking have been retired from ChatGPT and are no longer available, along with several older models. So the sharper question is not really whether Spud replaces GPT-5 in general; it is whether any future release changes the current GPT-5.3/GPT-5.4 product line.

On the developer side, OpenAI’s API documentation names GPT-5.4 and GPT-5.4 pro and describes GPT-5.4 as a frontier model for complex professional work. OpenAI also has a dedicated GPT-5.4 introduction page.

Why a visible Spud button is the least certain bet

ChatGPT’s model picker—the menu where users choose modes such as Instant, Thinking or Pro—is not necessarily a complete list of every model or routing decision underneath the product. OpenAI already says the Instant experience can automatically choose between GPT-5.3 Instant and GPT-5.4 Thinking.

There is also precedent for OpenAI changing what appears in the model picker. ChatGPT release notes previously said GPT-4.1 mini replaced GPT-4o mini in the model picker.

So even if Spud were a real internal codename, users would not necessarily see a button called Spud. It could ship under a formal GPT-branded name, be folded into an existing Instant/Thinking/Pro experience, or appear as part of an automatic routing layer rather than as a standalone visible option.

Bottom line

For now, the most reliable answer is: OpenAI has not confirmed Spud as a public ChatGPT model, and there is no official evidence that it will replace GPT-5.4 Pro.

If Spud is a future model or internal codename, the more realistic expectation is that it would appear through an official GPT name, a replacement of an existing entry, a plan-specific option or automatic routing under Instant/Thinking/Pro. Until OpenAI says so in an announcement, release note or API document, the right label is still insufficient evidence.
