How the Speedometer Works

The speedometer appears as a floating icon on the map while you’re actively navigating . It displays your current speed alongside the posted speed limit when that data is available.

Color alerts: In regions where Google Maps supports Speed Limits, the speedometer changes color if you exceed the limit — typically turning red to provide a visual warning .

Active navigation required: A key design choice is that the speedometer only appears when you have an active navigation route set. It will not show during simple map browsing or when the car is parked . This is intentional, aimed at reducing driver distraction.

Informational only: Google explicitly states that the speedometer shown in the app is for reference only, and drivers should always rely on their vehicle’s speedometer to confirm actual driving speed .

How to Enable the Speedometer

To turn on the feature, you need to adjust settings in the Google Maps app on your connected phone, not on the Android Auto screen itself :

1. Open Google Maps on your Android phone.
2. Tap your profile icon → Settings → Navigation.
3. Scroll down and toggle "Speedometer" on.

Once enabled, the speedometer will appear automatically on the Android Auto screen during active navigation — but only if the server-side rollout has reached your account. The feature is tied to Google Maps beta version 26.29.02.946673643, and it's a server-side toggle, so simply having the beta version does not guarantee access yet .

Where It’s Available Now

As of July 20, 2026, the rollout is very limited. Confirmed user reports come from only two regions :

• Canada
• India

The feature has not yet been confirmed in the United States, Europe, or other major markets. Google has not announced a timeline for broader availability .

Broader Android Auto Updates in 2026

The speedometer rollout comes alongside a wider set of Android Auto updates that Google announced in May 2026, which include:

• Material 3 redesign: A full user interface refresh with updated fonts, wallpapers, and smoother animations, designed to adapt to any screen shape (ultrawide, circular, etc.) .

• Edge-to-edge Maps: Google Maps can now expand to fill the entire infotainment screen regardless of aspect ratio .
• Car App Library updates: New developer tools (v1.8.0 and v1.9.0) for building customized, distraction-optimized media and browsing experiences in Android Automotive OS .
