Microsoft's 2026 AI in Education Report: 92% Adoption, New Classroom Tools, and a Training Gap

On June 24, 2026, Microsoft released the third edition of its 2026 AI in Education Report and simultaneously announced a suite of new AI-powered classroom tools for Microsoft 365 Education, available at no additional cost. The report, based on a survey of 3,345 people across six countries, shows that AI use in schools is now nearly universal — but formal training has not kept pace .

New AI-Powered Classroom Tools

Microsoft unveiled several new capabilities built into Microsoft 365 Education, rolling out to preview communities immediately and to general availability over the coming months :

• Unit Plans in Teach – Educators input a subject, grade level, language, and duration; the AI generates a draft Unit Plan with an overview, essential questions, and week-by-week structure, supporting academic standards from over 50 countries. Teachers can refine drafts and generate supporting materials via Copilot Chat .

• Student AI Guidelines in Assignments – Teachers can set per-assignment rules for AI use across four levels (from no AI allowed to full Copilot Chat use), helping address academic integrity concerns — the top AI worry for 41% of students and 42% of educators .

• Learning Zone – An educator-led interactive lesson tool that lets teachers control live lesson progression, view student activity, and review responses in real time .

• Study and Learn Agent (Copilot Chat) – A guided learning tool for students aged 13+ using scaffolded questions, flashcards, quizzes, and feedback instead of direct answers, designed to support critical thinking .

• Learning Activities – AI-generated flashcards, quizzes, matching tasks, and fill-in-the-blank exercises integrated within Assignments and Classwork, with students able to generate study activities from teacher-shared documents and PDFs .

• Copilot Notebooks – Expanded access to AI-assisted note-taking and study tools within the Microsoft 365 ecosystem .

• Group Assignment Tools – Teachers can reuse groups, move students between groups, and provide different resources to each group within a single assignment (available from August 2026) .

• Standards Alignment in Teams Assignments – Educators can attach educational standards to assignment instructions and generate rubrics aligned to those standards .

All tools are integrated into existing Microsoft 365 Education workflows with built-in privacy and security protections, and most require no additional licensing cost for eligible users .

Report Findings: Widespread AI Adoption Meets a Training Gap

The 2026 AI in Education Report was based on a survey of 3,345 people across K-12 and higher education in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Brazil, Japan, and Saudi Arabia, conducted February 13 – March 9, 2026 .

Near-Universal AI Use

• 92% of students and education leaders and 88% of educators have already used AI for school-related purposes .
• 58% of education leaders say their schools are already implementing or scaling AI .
• 78% of leaders, 76% of educators, and 65% of students report their AI use for school has increased over the past year .

A Stark Training Gap

• 66% of educators and 52% of students want monthly or quarterly AI training .
• 87% of educators and education leaders and 79% of students agree that knowing how to use AI effectively and responsibly is important for students' futures .
• 77% of students and 53% of educators say they have not received any formal AI training — a stark gap between perceived importance and actual support .
• Academic integrity was the leading AI concern for 41% of students and 42% of educators .

Turn from Experimentation to Structured Use

Microsoft's report concludes that education has "moved past early experimentation" but needs recurring, role-based training and clearer responsible-use guidance to turn adoption into meaningful learning outcomes rather than just productivity gains . In response, Microsoft also expanded its Microsoft Elevate for Educators training and credentialing program, with free professional learning resources and a new advanced certification track .
