Plan with flexibility. The festival opening date does not guarantee that every site stays open for the full winter. In 2026, Harbin Ice-Snow World closed on February 21 as rising temperatures melted the displays and raised safety concerns.24 January is a sensible target based on the 2026 season, but check the opening status of each venue close to your trip.

Changchun: another major ice-and-snow park

Changchun’s New World of Ice and Snow was promoted as an expanded attraction for the 2025–26 season, with a large area devoted to ice-and-snow recreation.39 It opened to visitors on December 19, 2025.42 Choose Changchun if you want a separate destination built around a major winter park, rather than adding more venues within Harbin.

Longqing Gorge: an option near Beijing

The Longqing Gorge Ice Lantern Festival is a practical alternative for travelers already visiting Beijing. Its 2026 season ran from January 15 to early March, with illuminated lantern displays and other ice-and-snow features.38 Treat those dates as a record of that season, not a standing schedule for future winters.
