For travelers interested in Miao and Dong communities, Qiandongnan Prefecture in southeastern Guizhou is a strong place to start. Rather than searching for one supposedly “most authentic” village, plan to encounter more than one community—and keep in mind that tourism can influence how culture is presented to visitors.28
