John Ternus’s Reported Plans for a Faster, Leaner Apple

Apple CEO John Ternus is reportedly considering changes to make the company develop products faster and operate with fewer management layers. The ideas include a stronger engineering focus and less reliance on Apple’s familiar spring and fall launch windows. They are reported plans under consideration—not a fully announced restructuring or a confirmed new release calendar.

The proposed shift would give Apple more flexibility to introduce products throughout the year, rather than concentrating launches around its traditional seasonal schedule. Reports also describe a goal of broadening Apple’s device range and making product development more experimental.

A leaner structure is another reported priority. The idea is to reduce some middle-management layers between engineers and senior executives, while cutting costs and looking for new revenue sources—including ways to earn more from existing products. The reporting does not specify a finalized organization chart, timeline or list of products that would follow a different release schedule.

What cuts have been reported

Separate reports describe Apple dismissing a number of engineering program managers in its hardware engineering organization. These roles coordinated work and schedules across product teams. Some affected employees were reportedly given several weeks to find other roles within Apple or face later layoffs; the report also described several directors among those affected.

Other reporting describes more than 200 job cuts across Vision Pro, Siri and software teams, with roughly 100 roles in the Vision Pro organization and roughly another 100 across Siri and software. Some affected software work involved AI features. These reductions were reported separately from the newer proposals to change Apple’s product pace and management structure, so the available reporting does not establish that they are one coordinated initiative.

The iPhone Duo is context, not proof of a new operating model
