Volkswagen Group’s battery business PowerCo and Gotion High-Tech plan three ventures across Spain, Slovakia and Morocco, with about €3.22 billion in total planned investment. The proposal combines battery-cell production in Spain and Slovakia with LFP cathode-material production in Morocco. Its stated capacities are targets, not current output, and the projects are not yet cleared to proceed.

The three proposed ventures
| Location |
Planned product and annual capacity |
Planned project investment |
Proposed ownership |
| Valencia/Sagunt, Spain |
Lithium-ion battery cells; 29.1 GWh |
About €2.26 billion |
PowerCo 51%; Gotion 49% |
| Šurany, Slovakia |
Battery cells; 8.4 GWh |
About €480 million |
Gotion 51%; PowerCo 49% |
| Kenitra, Morocco |
LFP cathode active material; 100,000 tonnes |
About €480 million |
Gotion 51%; PowerCo 49% |
The project amounts and ownership splits are reported in the partners’ plans and coverage of the announcement. The two cell plants have a combined planned capacity of 37.5 GWh per year; Morocco’s tonnage is a separate materials measure and should not be added to cell capacity.

The Valencia project is the largest by investment. Gotion’s planned contribution there is about €1.1 billion in return for its 49% interest, while PowerCo would retain the majority stake.
17 Across all three projects, Gotion is expected to contribute about €1.598 billion and PowerCo about €1.624 billion, making their overall contributions close to equal.

How the separate 5.3% Gotion stake sale fits in
Volkswagen has separately announced an agreement to sell 5.3% of its equity stake in Gotion. That transaction concerns Volkswagen’s shareholding in the Chinese battery maker; it is distinct from the ownership percentages in the three proposed joint ventures. Volkswagen said it would continue to hold a significant stake in Gotion after the sale.
What is still uncertain
The ventures remain proposals rather than operating projects. The companies had not yet signed a formal investment agreement, and shareholder and government approvals were still required.

4 Reporting also said no specific financing timeline had been provided, so the available information does not establish a firm production start date for the three sites.

The announcement describes the partnership as a way to develop a regional battery supply chain for Europe and includes joint procurement and sales activities. But the planned capacities should not be mistaken for guaranteed output: timing and delivery depend on the outstanding agreements, clearances and subsequent project execution.
