Kimi Antonelli’s Monza comeback puts him in control of the 2026 F1 title race

Kimi Antonelli has strengthened his 2026 Formula 1 championship case in the most convincing way possible: by turning what looked like a damage-limitation weekend into a defining victory. At his home Italian Grand Prix, the 20-year-old Mercedes driver rose from 19th on the grid after an engine penalty, passed teammate and closest rival George Russell in the closing laps, and extended his lead to 66 points. 217

Antonelli’s seventh win in 13 rounds was not simply another addition to a strong season. Russell started second and finished second; Antonelli began 17 places behind him and still won. Russell remains Antonelli’s nearest challenger, but his assessment after Monza was notably candid. “Definitely Kimi’s in control of it and he’s deserving to be in control of it,” Russell said after finishing second.

That is a practical reading of the evidence rather than a surrender. Russell still has a route back because 10 rounds remain, but he must consistently outscore Antonelli by a large margin. A title reversal would likely require both a sustained improvement from Russell and difficult weekends for the championship leader.
