Charles Leclerc’s 2026 Italian Grand Prix ended in retirement after a heavy crash at the exit of Parabolica at the end of lap two. The impact damaged the barriers and prompted a red flag, ending Ferrari’s hopes of a home-race result with Leclerc.

The first-chicane fight with Lewis Hamilton
Leclerc and Ferrari team-mate Lewis Hamilton ran wheel-to-wheel through the opening chicane. Hamilton attempted a move on the inside, was forced wide and ran through the gravel, dropping down the order. He complained over team radio that Leclerc had pushed him off.

That dramatic opening was separate from Leclerc’s eventual retirement. No contact with Hamilton caused the Parabolica accident; by then, Leclerc was defending fourth place from McLaren’s Oscar Piastri.

What caused Leclerc’s Parabolica crash?
At the final corner, Leclerc suffered a snap of oversteer as he applied power. Reports said his left-side tyres ran onto the green-painted outer runoff; he initially caught the slide, but the car regained grip and sent him across the gravel into the tyre barrier at high speed.

Leclerc did not present a confirmed mechanical explanation after the race. He said the Ferrari had felt “a little bit weird” and that he noticed a possible difference in power delivery from lap one to lap two. But he was clear that Ferrari needed to examine the data before reaching a conclusion.

Red flag, retirement and Leclerc’s condition
Race control initially deployed a safety car before stopping the race with a red flag so the damaged barrier could be repaired. The stoppage reset the event for the remaining drivers, but it could not save Leclerc’s race: his Ferrari was too badly damaged to continue.

Leclerc climbed out of the car unaided and Ferrari reported that he was OK after a visit to the Monza medical centre.
1 He later said his neck was fine, although he briefly experienced impaired vision in his right eye immediately after the impact. He said the issue had improved, while additional precautionary checks were still planned.

How the restart shaped the result and championship
The race resumed after the red flag, and Kimi Antonelli delivered a standout victory from 19th on the grid. George Russell finished second and Max Verstappen third; Hamilton recovered to sixth, while Leclerc scored no points.
Antonelli’s win extended his Drivers’ Championship advantage over Russell to 66 points. Hamilton remained third in the standings, 76 points behind the leader.
What it meant for the Spanish Grand Prix
Leclerc expected to be fit for the next round in Madrid, but he said he first needed further medical checks following the crash. The immediate priority was therefore clearance and recovery, alongside Ferrari’s investigation into the power-delivery concern, rather than treating Monza as a straightforward preparation week for Spain.
