Xiaomi Kunlun Debut: What the N90 Max and N70 Max Reveal About Its EREV Strategy

Xiaomi used its July 30, 2026 Pengcheng technology launch to introduce the Kunlun Technology Architecture, its platform for extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs), alongside two large SUVs: the five-seat N70 Max and the seven-seat flagship N90 Max. The vehicles have also been reported under the SkyNomad name. 168

The key point is that Xiaomi’s most widely repeated specifications apply to different models. The N90 Max is the 1,705km-range flagship; the N70 Max is the model with up to 505km of CLTC electric-only range and a ¥259,900 pre-sale price. 146

The Kunlun architecture: Xiaomi’s EREV platform

Kunlun is Xiaomi’s second major vehicle architecture after its battery-electric Modena platform. Xiaomi described it as comprising three parts: the Kunlun platform, the Kunlun Super Extended-Range System and a Kunlun full-domain safety system. 814

Its EREV formula is straightforward: a comparatively large traction battery supports day-to-day electric driving, while a gasoline range extender supplies electricity for longer journeys when charging is impractical. The engine is not the central proposition of the system; the selling point is greater flexibility between local electric use and long-distance travel.

Xiaomi said the 1.5-liter turbocharged range-extender program involved development work on seven core components and optimization of 57 parts. Reports identify the underlying engine as Harbin Dongan Automotive’s M15DRE, with a maximum net output of 112kW.

The range extender supports 92-, 95- and 98-octane gasoline. Xiaomi also stated that, after the initial service, its maintenance interval can be three years or 30,000km of range-extender operation. 16

N90 Max: the seven-seat flagship

The N90 Max is Xiaomi’s large seven-seat EREV flagship, which the company described as “a house you can move.” It combines a 76kWh battery, a 1.5-liter turbocharged range extender and a 60-liter fuel tank. 1

Xiaomi’s published claims for this model are:

• 464km CLTC electric-only range
• 1,705km CLTC combined range
• 6.26L/100km WLTC fuel consumption when the battery is depleted
• ¥299,900 pre-sale price 145

These are manufacturer-rated figures under Chinese CLTC and WLTC test procedures, rather than a guarantee of real-world range or consumption. Driving speed, temperature, terrain, payload and charging habits can materially change actual results.

N70 Max: where the 505km and ¥259,900 figures belong

The N70 Max is the five-seat counterpart and was positioned as a large all-wheel-drive EREV SUV. It uses a 76kWh battery configuration and is rated for up to 505km of CLTC electric-only range. Its pre-sale price was ¥259,900. 610

That distinction matters: the 505km CLTC figure is not the N90 Max’s electric-range rating, and ¥259,900 was not the N90 Max’s pre-sale price. The N90 Max was rated at 464km electric range and ¥299,900. 146

What Xiaomi is trying to achieve

With Kunlun and the Pengcheng/SkyNomad SUVs, Xiaomi is expanding from battery-only models into China’s large-family EREV market. Reuters described the launch as an expansion into the large-family SUV segment in an intensely competitive Chinese auto market. 1

The N90 Max’s seven-seat layout, long claimed combined range and premium positioning put it in the broad same market space as large range-extended SUVs from brands such as Li Auto and AITO. Xiaomi’s approach is to pair its EV platform work with a range extender for drivers who want electric driving but are reluctant to depend entirely on public charging for long journeys.

Pre-sales began July 30, with Xiaomi saying the vehicles would reach the market in September 2026. 17 The strategic significance is therefore larger than one range figure: Kunlun gives Xiaomi a second powertrain path, designed to address charging access and long-trip confidence while retaining the electric-first experience of an EREV. 8
