NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope launched successfully at 7:26 a.m. EDT on August 30, 2026, from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy. It separated from the launcher and is headed toward a halo orbit around the Sun–Earth L2 point, roughly 1 million miles (1.5 million km) from Earth.

Roman’s Wide Field Instrument is a 300-megapixel visible-to-near-infrared camera with Hubble-like angular resolution, but a field of view about 100 times larger than Hubble’s. It is built to make enormous, sharp sky surveys—finding distant supernovae, mapping galaxies and stars, and measuring gravitational lensing from dark matter.

Its Coronagraph Instrument is a technology demonstration designed to suppress starlight and directly image some giant exoplanets and their dusty disks. Roman’s broader planet survey is expected to detect planets through gravitational microlensing, potentially including cold worlds, free-floating planets, and planets far from their stars that are difficult for other methods to find.

Roman, Webb, ESA’s Euclid, and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory are complementary rather than interchangeable: Roman provides wide, high-resolution infrared surveys; Webb can follow up select targets in much greater infrared detail; Euclid contributes broad dark-universe mapping; and Rubin repeatedly surveys the optical sky, discovering transient events and tracking how structures evolve. Together, their measurements of supernova distances, galaxy clustering, and weak gravitational lensing can test whether cosmic acceleration comes from dark energy or a need to revise gravity.
Roman carries a 7.9-foot (2.4-meter) primary mirror—the same diameter as Hubble’s—originally provided from a U.S. reconnaissance-satellite program. The mirror’s availability gave the mission a powerful telescope without having to develop that optic from scratch.

NASA listed a five-year prime mission and a 10-year goal. A future robotic servicing or refueling mission could, in principle, extend operations by replenishing propellant, but that is a potential capability—not a funded or approved mission commitment.

The spacecraft launched about eight to nine months ahead of its previous schedule. The search evidence supports the schedule gain, but does not establish a single definitive reason it was ahead of schedule or independently substantiate the “under budget” characterization; the strongest explanation is disciplined integration, testing, and launch processing after assembly was completed.

Nancy Grace Roman was NASA’s first chief astronomer and a foundational advocate for space astronomy, often called the “mother of Hubble.” Naming this flagship observatory for her recognizes both the scientific architecture she helped establish and the historically underrecognized contributions of women in astronomy; it is more precise to call Roman NASA’s first flagship space telescope named for a woman than NASA’s first space telescope named for one.
