Iran announced a new gas-field discovery in southern Fars Province containing more than 7.5 trillion cubic feet (about 212 billion cubic metres) of natural gas. The government estimates that roughly 5.7 Tcf—about a 72–73% recovery rate—is technically recoverable. 37

Why the discovery matters

• Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad described the find as “sweet” gas: gas with very low sulphur and other corrosive impurities. That normally means lower processing costs, less equipment corrosion and emissions-control burden, and potentially higher-value sales into domestic industry, petrochemicals, or export markets.
• The field also contains gas condensates—light liquid hydrocarbons produced alongside gas—which can be refined or used as petrochemical feedstock. Paknejad said these liquids alone could be worth “tens of billions of dollars.” 37
• As a scale comparison, Iran said the recoverable volume is equivalent to about 15 years of output from one phase of South Pars, the giant field Iran shares with Qatar. 37

War damage and winter risk

• The discovery does not immediately solve Iran’s energy crisis. Air strikes on energy infrastructure, including South Pars, cut roughly one-quarter of Iran’s daily gas-production capacity after attacks began in late February. 37
• Some capacity has returned, but the government has still warned of winter gas shortages and urged households to reduce consumption. A shortage would also constrain gas-fired power generation and industrial output. 37
• Development is likely to take years because Iran entered the war with an energy sector already constrained by Western sanctions, chronic under-investment, and power cuts; further sanctions threats could make financing, imported technology, drilling services, processing equipment, insurance, and marketing still harder. 37

Diplomatic and export complications

• The June Islamabad memorandum, mediated by Pakistan and Qatar, was intended to halt attacks and lead to negotiations; it also envisaged reopening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports after signature. 4 5
