The timing follows a July family meeting at Highgrove involving Charles, Queen Camilla, Harry, Meghan and the children. That was reported as the first in-person meeting between the King and Archie and Lilibet in more than four years, making it an important sign of renewed contact between father and son.

However, the July meeting reportedly did not include a discussion of the move. It also does not establish that the wider family rift has been resolved. Prince William and Catherine were reportedly made aware of the plans, but there has been no comparable public indication of a reconciliation between the brothers.

Security remains an unresolved issue

Security is the most consequential practical question surrounding the move. Harry has previously argued that he could not safely bring Meghan and their children to Britain without police protection.
