Stripe announced an agreement to acquire OpenRouter but did not publish a purchase price. Bloomberg and other outlets reported a transaction worth more than $7 billion, while The New York Times reported a figure of about $7.5 billion.
The New York Times also reported that approximately $1.5 billion would go to the founders and $6 billion to investors. The Next Web noted that the reported figures varied and that neither company disclosed the terms.
The valuation would represent a dramatic increase from OpenRouter’s reported $1.3 billion post-money valuation after its $113 million Series B in May. If the $7.5 billion estimate is accurate, the implied value is roughly 5.8 times the May valuation in a matter of months. That comparison is directional, because a private funding valuation and an acquisition price can reflect different deal structures and conditions.
Stripe’s stated rationale is that OpenRouter helps businesses route and optimize token usage. The strategic logic is straightforward: as AI software consumes more tokens, the cost and speed of each model call become central product decisions.
A model gateway can potentially improve economics by sending each request to a model that meets the required quality threshold without automatically using the most expensive option. At scale, that can affect an AI product’s margins, response times, and ability to adopt new providers.
This is also consistent with Stripe’s broader focus on usage-based businesses. Stripe completed its acquisition of Metronome, a company focused on orchestrating billing for complex usage-based models, in January 2026. Stripe has separately described products for tracking token usage and supporting token-based payments.

Stripe CEO Patrick Collison has argued that tokens are becoming a central economic unit for AI software. OpenRouter gives that thesis an operational layer: it helps determine where token demand goes and how efficiently it is served. Stripe contributes the systems needed to price, invoice, and settle usage.
The combination could make Stripe a broader infrastructure company for AI commerce, rather than only a payments processor. It would connect model selection with the financial workflows that businesses need to operate AI products at scale.
Stripe’s expansion already reflects ambitions beyond card payments. The company completed its acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure provider Bridge for a reported $1.1 billion, and a February 2026 tender offer valued Stripe at $159 billion. Stripe and Advent International also made a reported offer of more than $53 billion for PayPal, but that was a bid—not a completed acquisition.
OpenRouter’s marketplace-style architecture supports a multi-model ecosystem. Developers can compare and use models from different providers through a common interface, while newer providers gain a distribution channel that does not require every customer to integrate with them directly.
That could encourage competition on price, reliability, latency, and specialized performance. It also reduces the risk that developers remain with one model solely because switching is technically difficult.
Stripe’s ownership introduces an important caveat. OpenRouter’s value depends partly on being a trusted, multi-provider intermediary. If the platform remains open and neutral, Stripe could become a major economic bridge between AI suppliers and businesses. If providers or customers believe Stripe is favoring particular models or products, that neutrality could weaken.
Stripe’s OpenRouter acquisition is best understood as a bet on AI demand routing—not on one winning foundation model. The reported $7.5 billion price is unconfirmed, but the strategic message is clear: model choice, token measurement, and payment settlement are converging into one infrastructure problem.
For developers, the deal reinforces the value of model-agnostic systems. For AI providers, it highlights the importance of distribution through routing layers. For Stripe, it offers a path from processing payments for software to helping manage the economic machinery inside AI products.
