Secure communications: This is China’s most mature quantum-commercialization track. China has built a carrier-grade national quantum-communications network of more than 10,000 km, intended to move beyond technology-verification networks to reliable operational infrastructure. Metropolitan quantum-communications networks now span more than 40 cities, while China Telecom Quantum Group has offered QKD-enabled secure calling at consumer and institutional scale—reported as more than 7 million users and 5,000 organizational customers.
The important qualification is that QKD secures key exchange; it does not make every part of a communication system automatically secure.
Healthcare and sensing: CIQTEK’s quantum-spin-magnetometer magnetocardiography system is aimed at rapid, non-invasive cardiovascular screening. This illustrates a key commercial reality: quantum sensors can reach practical deployment before general-purpose quantum computers because they solve focused measurement problems without requiring large-scale error-corrected processors.
Hybrid computing, not replacement: Hefei’s hybrid center combines a high-performance classical supercomputer with two superconducting quantum computers and one trapped-ion machine. That architecture reflects the near-term division of labor: classical systems still handle data preparation, control, error mitigation, optimization, and most of the workload; quantum processors are used as specialized accelerators for selected subproblems. Fully fault-tolerant quantum computers remain years away, so replacing classical supercomputers is not a credible near-term proposition.
Industrial cluster and policy: Hefei has developed an ecosystem of more than 100 quantum-related companies, connecting universities, national laboratories, hardware firms, telecom operators, and application users. Anhui is reportedly organizing trials in hundreds of real-world scenarios and planning a 10-billion-yuan quantum fund, lowering the cost and risk of piloting technologies before a mature mass market exists.
Independent analysis also characterizes China’s commercial quantum-communications activity as more mature than its computing and sensing sectors, while noting its close relationship with state financing and objectives.
Internationalization: Chinese firms are beginning to export hardware and capability rather than only publish research. Origin Quantum has pursued overseas exports, and Thailand’s plan for its first trapped-ion quantum computer signals demand for foreign deployment, training, cloud access, and local application development. International expansion is meaningful, although export controls and geopolitical constraints can limit markets and supply chains.
The common commercial test is therefore changing: the question is no longer only “can the device demonstrate a quantum effect?” It is “does it improve a forecast, reduce energy waste, help rank drug candidates, secure a service, speed a medical screen, or generate a viable customer offering?” The evidence is strongest for quantum communications and sensing; computing claims are real but remain application-specific, hybrid, and dependent on careful comparison with strong classical baselines.
