Apple’s own China-specific model appears to be separate from its earlier reported agreement to incorporate Alibaba’s Qwen into Apple Intelligence features in China. Qwen was expected to function as an external AI service, similar in broad concept to optional third-party model integrations used for some Apple Intelligence features elsewhere.
That means the new report should not automatically be read as evidence that Qwen has been cancelled. The most cautious interpretation is that Apple may use a mixed arrangement: its own localized model for some functions and Qwen for others. Neither Apple nor Alibaba has publicly explained how the two systems would be divided, or whether both would be included in the final product.
The Qwen arrangement briefly became more concrete on August 8, when Apple published a Chinese-language support guide for eligible Mac users in mainland China. The guide explained that users could connect Alibaba’s Qwen service to Siri and Writing Tools.
According to the reported guide, Qwen could provide more detailed Siri responses for some requests, including analysis of photos and documents. Writing Tools could also use the service to generate text or images from user descriptions.
Apple removed the page less than a day after it appeared. Because the document was taken down, it should be treated as evidence of a documented integration plan—not proof that the capability was broadly live or officially launched.
There is no publicly announced launch timetable for the reported Apple-built model or for Apple Intelligence’s China rollout in the sources available here. Reuters reported that Apple Intelligence was expected to launch in China, but Apple and Alibaba had not provided a firm date.
The withdrawn support guide adds uncertainty rather than resolving it. It showed how a Qwen connection might work on Mac, but its removal means users should not assume that the feature is currently available.
Apple’s reported China model and its Qwen partnership are best understood as two connected but distinct parts of an evolving plan. Apple appears to be moving toward a model it controls and has localized with Alibaba’s assistance, while still keeping open a role for Qwen as a third-party service. The final product scope, supported devices, model responsibilities, and launch date remain unconfirmed.
