Crypto also offers a payment model that is closer to the way software already works: through APIs. A service can request payment, an agent can authorize a transaction, and the service can return the result without requiring a human to enter card details or create a separate account.
That does not mean crypto eliminates compliance or intermediaries. It means the payment interface can be embedded directly into software. Exchanges, custodians, wallet providers, issuers, networks, and compliance systems may still sit behind the experience.
Coinbase is building several components that turn the AiFi thesis into products.
Coinbase for Agents gives an AI agent an isolated financial account inside a customer’s Coinbase account. According to Coinbase’s documentation, the agent can hold funds, manage a portfolio, trade assets, convert currencies, and make payments autonomously.
The isolated-portfolio model is significant because it separates an agent’s authority from the customer’s broader account. In principle, an operator can fund a specific agent and define what it is allowed to do rather than giving software unrestricted access to all assets.
Coinbase’s Agentic Wallet is designed for agents that need to hold and spend USDC while paying for x402 services. The wallet is managed by Coinbase, so the agent does not need to handle a private key directly. Operators can fund the wallet and set spending limits, restricting how much the agent can pay.
Those controls are more than a convenience feature. They show the practical compromise at the heart of AiFi: agents need enough autonomy to transact quickly, but not so much authority that one compromised instruction or malicious service can drain an account.
Base provides the network layer in Coinbase’s proposed stack, while USDC is the main payment asset described in the company’s agentic-payment materials. A fiat-linked stablecoin is more practical for API billing than a highly volatile asset because a service can quote a price and an agent can manage a predictable budget—provided the stablecoin maintains its value and remains redeemable.

An autonomous transaction creates an accountability problem. If an agent commits fraud, violates sanctions, makes an unsuitable trade, or enters a contract, responsibility could be disputed among the agent operator, model provider, wallet custodian, customer, and merchant.
Cross-border regulation adds another layer of uncertainty. The Financial Stability Board reported progress but also significant gaps and inconsistencies in the implementation of its crypto-asset and stablecoin recommendations across jurisdictions.
For AiFi to operate at scale, businesses will need clearer rules for identity, authorization, reporting, consumer protection, and liability.
Volatile cryptoassets are difficult to use for recurring services or micropayments. A price can change between authorization and settlement, making an agent’s budget less predictable and a merchant’s revenue harder to account for.
That makes the practical AiFi model heavily dependent on stablecoins. Stablecoins reduce day-to-day price volatility, but only if their reserves, redemption mechanisms, liquidity, operational systems, and legal status remain reliable.
Regulators and international financial bodies continue to identify risks involving stablecoins, including financial stability, illicit finance, privacy, cybersecurity, and cross-border supervision. The Bank for International Settlements has also argued that current stablecoin designs fall short of key properties expected of sound money.
Giving an AI agent spending power expands the consequences of a mistake or attack. Risks could include prompt injection, malicious API responses, stolen credentials, fraudulent merchants, compromised models, smart-contract vulnerabilities, and flawed spending rules.
Controls such as isolated accounts, spending caps, approved counterparties, transaction monitoring, policy engines, recovery procedures, and human escalation can reduce the danger. But every additional control introduces friction and limits the fully autonomous experience that AiFi promises.
Public blockchain payments can make transaction histories and counterparties easier to analyze. Regulated financial systems, meanwhile, may require know-your-customer checks, sanctions screening, anti-money-laundering controls, audit trails, and data retention.
An agentic payment system therefore has to balance several competing goals: user privacy, business confidentiality, regulatory visibility, and the ability to identify a responsible party when something goes wrong. That is a governance problem as much as a technical one.
AiFi is most credible as a framework for programmable, stablecoin-based commerce between software services. x402 addresses a real limitation of web APIs by allowing payment to occur inside the request flow, while Coinbase’s agentic accounts and wallets provide ways to give software controlled access to funds.
The larger claim—that crypto will become the default financial system for autonomous agents—remains conditional. It depends on stablecoins that users and merchants can trust, rules that work across borders, secure agent identity and authorization, and liability standards that make autonomous spending accountable.
For now, AiFi is best understood as an infrastructure bet: Coinbase is preparing for a world in which software does not merely recommend purchases, but discovers services, negotiates access, and pays for them. Whether that world grows into a new financial system will depend less on the slogan than on the reliability of the controls underneath it.
