Data Center Location and Capacity

The facility is located in Tydal, Norway . Bitdeer already runs Bitcoin-mining operations at this site on renewable hydroelectricity . The total power capacity is 133 megawatts, of which 121 megawatts are dedicated as IT load to Nvidia hardware . Capacity will be delivered in two phases through March 2027 .

Nvidia Hardware

The data center will be outfitted with Nvidia Vera Rubin rack-scale systems, Nvidia's next-generation architecture that succeeds the Hopper and Blackwell families . Volta intends to fill the entire contracted capacity with Vera Rubin-powered infrastructure .

How This Fits Anthropic's Broader Compute Strategy

The Volta deal is the latest and largest in a series of major compute commitments Anthropic has made in recent months . It reflects several strategic priorities:

• Supplier diversification. By working with a flexible startup rather than relying solely on AWS, Google Cloud, or Microsoft Azure, Anthropic gains access to capacity that traditional hyperscalers cannot deliver fast enough .
• Parallel in-house chip development. Anthropic is simultaneously building its own chip design team, aiming to create custom AI accelerators as a long-term hedge against GPU shortages and dependence on Nvidia .
• Competitive positioning. Rivals OpenAI and Google are spending billions on compute procurement. Locking up 121 MW of Vera Rubin capacity for six years gives Anthropic a multi-year runway to train next-generation models ahead of competitors .
