Safeguards Google claimed were in place

Why critics found those safeguards insufficient

• BBC Verify found that while the SynthID watermark generally worked, it was possible to circumnavigate the checks and trick Gemini into saying fake Google Earth images were real. External AI detection tools also sometimes failed to identify the Google Earth AI content .

Bill Greer (geospatial analyst and co-founder of Common Space) told BBC Verify: "This is potentially particularly damaging to public trust because satellite imagery has historically been seen as an especially trustworthy source of data" . "We've seen geospatial professionals using this feature for a range of useful purposes, however we've also seen people sharing screenshots of generated imagery that appear to violate our policies. We know that people uniquely trust Google Earth for a reliable view of the world. We are rolling back this feature in Google Earth while we work on implementing stronger guardrails."
