A prior SPTpol-500d catalog (689 candidates) found about 21% at redshift z > 1; the SPT-3G catalog reaches lower masses and higher redshifts . While a specific "fraction newly discovered" for this 2026 catalog has not yet been published in detail, the catalog roughly triples the number of SZ-selected cluster candidates known from the South Pole Telescope .
A companion paper reports a sample of 8,892 cluster candidates detected above a significance threshold of ξ = 4, with an expected purity greater than 82% .
SPT-3G identifies galaxy clusters by mapping the sky in three millimeter-wave bands (95, 150, and 220 GHz) using arrays of transition-edge-sensor bolometers . The thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect is a spectral distortion of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) caused by inverse Compton scattering of CMB photons off hot electrons in the intracluster medium of galaxy clusters . By comparing the multi-frequency maps, the SPT-3G team separates the unique tSZ spectral signature from the primary CMB and other foregrounds, producing Compton-y maps from which cluster candidates are detected blindly .
