UK MOD Reveals Russia Fitting Anti-Drone Cages to Black Sea Submarines After Ukrainian Strike

What the Cages Protect

The cages are counter-unmanned aircraft systems (counter-UAS) structures mounted over the vessels' conning towers, sometimes described by outlets as "barbecue grills." They are designed to protect the submarines' periscopes, masts, and antennas from drone-launched munitions—among the most vulnerable parts of a surfaced or pier-side submarine.

A Response to a Successful Strike, Not Prevention

UK intelligence assessed the measure as a direct defensive reaction to a demonstrated threat, not a preventive step. In December 2025, Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) executed an unprecedented underwater drone strike against a Kilo-class submarine at Novorossiysk using a "Sub Sea Baby" drone. UK intelligence assessed that strike "likely caused significant damage." Satellite imagery in the months that followed showed the damaged submarine remained immobile at its berth, while other submarines at the same base continued normal operations—confirming the strike's real-world impact. The cage fitting observed in June 2026 is a direct consequence of that demonstrated capability.

The Broader Pattern of 'Cope Cage' Armor

This fits a well-documented Russian practice since the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine:

• Tanks and armored vehicles: Throughout 2022–2023, Russian forces welded improvised slat armor onto tank turrets intended to defeat top-attack Javelin and NLAW munitions. Their effectiveness was widely disputed.
• Naval vessels: Russia has used decoy submarines painted at Black Sea ports, camouflage paint schemes, and now anti-drone cages on submarines.
• Aircraft: Russian Aerospace Forces have erected protective shelters and used camouflage at airbases to counter Ukrainian drone strikes.
• Port defenses: Russia fortified Novorossiysk harbor with boom barriers against surface drone boats after the Black Sea Fleet relocated there from Sevastopol. Ukrainian underwater drones bypassed those defenses, leading to the December 2025 strike—which prompted this latest cage retrofitting.

The pattern is consistently reactive and improvisational: Russia deploys ad hoc physical armor solutions—first on land, then on surface ships, and now on submarines—in response to specific Ukrainian weapon systems that have already caused losses, rather than proactively.
