(19–34) The Witness of the Immerser
¹⁹And this is the testimony of Yōḥannān, when the Yəhūḏāyē (The Praised‑Ones) sent‑outward to him from Ōrəšləm (The Inheritance‑Place‑of‑Peace) priests and Lēwāyē (The Attached‑Ones) so that they might ask him, "Who are you?" ²⁰And he confessed and did not deny; he confessed, "I am not the Anointed‑Movement."
²¹And they asked him further, "What then? Are you Elīyā (My‑Source‑is‑YH)?"
And he said, "I am not."
"Are you the seer‑who‑sees‑ahead?"
And he answered, "No."
²²So they said to him, "Who are you, so that we may give an answer to those who sent‑us‑outward? What do you say concerning yourself?"
²³He said, "I am a voice that calls‑out in the mdabbrā (wilderness‑pasture), 'Make straight the way of MĀRYĀ (The Sovereign‑Source),' just as Ešʿayā (The Source‑Sustains) the seer‑who‑sees‑ahead said."
²⁴Now those who had been sent‑outward were from the Pārīšē (The Separated‑Ones).
²⁵And they asked him, saying to him, "Why then do you immerse if you are not the Anointed‑Movement, nor Elīyā, nor the seer‑who‑sees‑ahead?"
²⁶Yōḥannān answered them, "I immerse in water, but among you stands one whom you do not know.
²⁷He is the one who comes after me, and he has come to be before me; I am not worthy to loosen the strap of his sandal."
²⁸These things took place in Bēṯ‑ʿAnyā (The House‑of‑Affliction) beyond the Yurdnan (The Descender), where Yōḥannān was immersing.
²⁹On the next day Yōḥannān saw Yēšūaʿ (The Living‑Deliverer) coming toward him and said, "Behold, the Īmrēh (The Lamb‑Movement) of ʾALHĀ, who takes‑up the ḥṭīṯā (Psychic‑Fragmentation) of the woven‑age!"
³⁰This is he concerning whom I said, 'After me comes a man who has come to be before me, because he was prior to me.'
³¹And I did not know him, but so that he might be made‑known to Yisrāʾēl (The One‑Who‑Sees‑Source), for this reason I came immersing in water."
³²And Yōḥannān bore‑witness, saying, "I beheld the Rūḥā (Breath‑Movement) descending like a dove from šmayyā (The Heights), and it rested upon him.
³³And I did not know him, but the One who sent‑me‑outward to immerse in water said to me, 'The one upon whom you see the Breath‑Movement descending and resting, he is the one who immerses in the Rūḥā d‑Qūdšā (Breath‑Movement‑of‑The‑Set‑Apart‑Place).'
³⁴And I have beheld and borne‑witness that this is the Son of ʾALHĀ."
(35–51) The First Gatherers Drawn to the Deliverer
³⁵Again on the next day Yōḥannān was standing with two of his talmīḏē (learners), ³⁶and he looked‑intently at Yēšūaʿ as he walked and said, "Behold, the Lamb‑Movement of ʾALHĀ!" ³⁷And the two learners heard him speak, and they followed after Yēšūaʿ.
³⁸Yēšūaʿ turned and saw them following and said to them, "What do you seek?"
They said to him, "Rabbī (My‑Great‑One), where are you staying?"
³⁹He said to them, "Come and see."
So they came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day.
It was about the tenth hour.
⁴⁰One of the two who heard Yōḥannān and followed after Yēšūaʿ was Andrāʾōs (The Manly‑One), the brother of Šimʿōn (The Hearing‑One).
⁴¹He first found his brother Šimʿōn and said to him, "We have found the Anointed‑Movement."
⁴²And he brought him to Yēšūaʿ.
Yēšūaʿ looked‑intently at him and said, "You are Šimʿōn, son of Yōnā (The Dove‑One); you will be called Kēpā (The Rock‑One)."
⁴³On the next day Yēšūaʿ resolved to go out to Gəlīlā (The Turning‑Circle), and he found Pīlīpōs (The Horse‑Loving‑One) and said to him, "Follow me."
⁴⁴Now Pīlīpōs was from Bēṯ‑Ṣaydā (House‑of‑Hunting), from the town of Andrāʾōs and Šimʿōn.
⁴⁵Pīlīpōs found Nəṯanʾēl (The‑Gift‑of‑Source) and said to him, "We have found the one about whom Mōše wrote in the imposed‑ordering and the seers: Yēšūaʿ, son of Yōsēp̄ (The Gatherer), from Nāṣərāṯ (The‑Guarded‑Place)."
⁴⁶Nəṯanʾēl said to him, "From Nāṣərāṯ can anything good come?"
Pīlīpōs said to him, "Come and see."
⁴⁷Yēšūaʿ saw Nəṯanʾēl coming toward him and said concerning him, "Truly, a son of Yisrāʾēl in whom there is no deceit."
⁴⁸Nəṯanʾēl said to him, "From where do you know me?"
Yēšūaʿ answered him, "Before Pīlīpōs called you, while you were under the fig‑tree, I saw you."
⁴⁹Nəṯanʾēl replied, "Rabbī, you are the Son of ʾALHĀ; you are the King of Yisrāʾēl."
⁵⁰Yēšūaʿ said to him, "Because I said to you that I saw you under the fig‑tree, do you firm‑trust? You will see greater things than these."
⁵¹And he said to him, "Āmēn (The Firm‑Seal), āmēn, I say to you, from now on you will see šmayyā opened and the malʾakē (messengers) of ʾALHĀ ascending and descending toward the Son‑of‑the‑Human‑Child."
• In 1:1, brēšīṯ / in‑the‑first‑forth‑movement
The Peshitta opening of John 1:1 uses brēšīṯ and Milta in a form corresponding to “in the beginning” and “the Word.” Within this project’s symbolic reading, the opening marker carries the sense of a head or foremost‑portion pressing forward into manifestation. This is read here not merely as a temporal starting point but as the leading‑edge of emanation, where Milta / structured‑emanation stands before any created thing. This reading is broadly compatible with discussions of Syriac John as preserving a Semitic “Word‑at‑the‑beginning” interpretation, though the present glossing remains project‑specific.
• In 1:14, aġen ban / pitched‑tent among us
John 1:14 in the Peshitta presents the Milta as becoming flesh and dwelling among us. Within this project’s symbolic register, the dwelling language is rendered as pitched‑tent among us. The structured‑emanation does not remain distant but is read as drawing‑near and spreading‑covering within the realm of flesh. This movement recalls, at the level of symbolic resonance, the imagery of divine presence dwelling among the people.
• In 1:29, ḥṭīṯeh d‑ʿālmā / the‑psychic‑fragmentation‑of‑the‑woven‑age
John 1:29 identifies Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes up or takes away the sin of the world. In this project’s internal lexicon, ḥṭīṯā / psychic‑fragmentation is used for the condition commonly rendered “sin.” Joined with ʿālmā / woven‑age, it points here to a condition that pervades the created order. The Lamb‑Movement is therefore read as not merely covering this fragmentation but taking‑it‑up, lifting the weight of what has been bent‑out‑of‑shape.
The phrase concerning glory in 1:14 points to the radiance of the only‑born from the Father, full of favor and truth. In this project’s reading, this is not a glory assigned from outside but one that issues‑forth from his own being as the structured‑emanation made visible. In 1:17, the Peshitta text states that the law was given through Moses, while truth and favor came through Jesus the Messiah.
Here, qšūṯā w‑ṭaybūtā / firm‑truth‑and‑undeserved‑favor are read not merely as abstract qualities delivered through YĒŠŪAʿ MŠĪḤĀ as a channel, but as realities that emerge‑from him as the one in whom firm‑truth and undeserved‑favor are fully present and actively flowing‑outward to those who receive.
1:1 [ܡܠܬܐ] The Peshitta text of John 1:1 uses Milta where many English translations use “Word.” Within the Aleph → Tav and Milta → Ḥayē arc of this project, this term marks the initial emanation‑point, the moment when Source‑consciousness presses‑outward into articulate form. The term is read here not as a label for a written text but as the speaking‑forth that shapes reality itself. In this chapter, Milta is treated as the first‑movement of the Source entering‑into the realm of created things.
1:1 [ܐܠܗܐ] The Peshitta text of John 1:1 places Milta with ʾALHĀ and also predicates ʾALHĀ of Milta. In the Syriac framework used here, ʾALHĀ / The Sovereign‑Source is read as the unseen‑foundation from whom Milta / structured‑emanation proceeds and with whom it remains in unbroken‑nearness. This is a project‑specific theological rendering of the Johannine opening rather than a standard lexical translation.
1:4 [ܚܝܐ] John 1:4 states that life was in him and that the life was the light of human beings. Within the Milta → Ḥayē arc, ḥayyē / life‑provision represents the provision phase. The emanation does not remain abstract but issues‑forth as active‑life that enlightens and sustains the human‑children. The life‑provision is thus read as the emanation‑made‑accessible.
1:5 [ܚܫܘܟܐ] John 1:5 contrasts the shining light with the darkness that does not grasp or overcome it. Within this project’s imagery, ḥšōḵā / gathered‑darkness suggests a drawn‑together or compressed‑obscurity that resists the light‑radiance. The darkness does not grasp or overcome the light, yet it remains a thickened‑barrier that the light‑radiance must penetrate. The movement is one of persistent‑shining against a pressed‑together resistance.
1:9 [ܢܘܗܪܐ ܕܫܪܪܐ] John 1:9 speaks of the true light that enlightens every human being coming into the world. In this project’s rendering, nūhrā d‑šrārā / light‑radiance‑of‑firm‑truth describes a radiance that is not fleeting but anchored‑in‑certainty. This is the light‑radiance that holds‑its‑shape and does not flicker. The phrase grounds the enlightening of every human‑child in the unshakable‑foundation of the Source’s own firm‑truth.
1:12 [ܫܘܠܛܢܐ] John 1:12 states that those who received him were given authority or power to become children of God. In this project’s lexicon, šūlṭānā / the‑loosening‑rule is read as the authority that both rules and releases. Those who receive the structured‑emanation are given the loosening‑rule to become children of ʾALHĀ. This is interpreted here not as a political office but as a released‑standing that unties the prior condition of fragmentation and opens the way to belonging.
1:14 [ܒܣܪܐ] John 1:14 states that the Milta became bsrā, commonly rendered “flesh.” In this project’s reading, bsrā / flesh‑substance points to the material‑layer of human existence. When Milta / structured‑emanation becomes flesh‑substance, the movement is one of extreme‑nearness. The emanation does not merely touch the material realm but enters‑into its fabric, taking‑on its vulnerability and visible‑form.
1:17 [ܢܡܘܣܐ] John 1:17 contrasts the nāmōsā given through Moses with truth and favor coming through Jesus the Messiah. In this project’s rendering, nāmōsā / imposed‑ordering carries the sense of a given‑structure that shapes conduct from the outside. The text is therefore read as moving from external‑shaping to inward‑receiving, from command to gift.
1:29 [ܐܡܪܗ ܕܐܠܗܐ] John 1:29 names Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes up or takes away the sin of the world. In this project’s symbolic reading, Īmrēh d‑ʾALHĀ / The Lamb‑Movement‑of‑The‑Sovereign‑Source is treated as both a sacrificial and utterance‑oriented image. The Lamb‑Movement is thus read as both a spoken‑word and a led‑sacrifice. The movement is one of silent‑carrying joined to divine‑speaking.
1:51 [ܒܪܗ ܕܐܢܫܐ] John 1:51 speaks of the messengers of God ascending and descending upon or toward the Son of Man. In this project’s rendering, Breh d‑ʾEnāšā / Son‑of‑the‑Human‑Child marks the one who stands within the fragile‑human realm. The messengers of ʾALHĀ ascending and descending toward him show, in this symbolic reading, that he is the point‑of‑meeting where The Heights and the human‑realm are joined. The movement is one of open‑passage: the Son‑of‑the‑Human‑Child is the place of continuous‑exchange between Source and flesh‑substance.
