Albania's 'Flamingo Revolution' Turns Violent

What the protesters demand

Additional demands include cancellation of the Kushner-linked resort contracts, a ban on construction in protected areas, and anti-corruption investigations by the Special Structure against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) . How the movement expanded

The protests began in late May 2026 as an environmental campaign against a €1.4–€4 billion luxury resort on the Zvërnec peninsula, near the protected Vjosa-Narta Lagoon — a critical habitat for flamingos, loggerhead sea turtles, and the endangered Mediterranean monk seal . Jared Kushner's investment firm Affinity Partners is the backer . The project includes developments on Sazan Island, part of the Karaburun–Sazan National Marine Park, and the Narta Lagoon, including the Pishë-Poro beach in Zvërnec, which forms part of the Vjosa–Narta Protected Landscape .

In April, Albanian authorities allowed bulldozers to tear through the protected Vjosa-Narta delta without permits or environmental review, sparking the first mass anger . Videos of construction machinery on Sazan Island were posted to social media, igniting public outrage . By late June, Deutsche Welle described the movement as Albania's largest civic protest movement since the fall of communism, with daily demonstrations in Tirana and other cities .

The movement is notable for being non-partisan, transversal, led by young people, cadres, local residents, and ecological organizations . Protesters carry cardboard cut-outs of flamingos and chant “Rama ciao” to the tune of Bella Ciao .

Government's defense

The Rama government touts the Kushner-linked coastal project as key to high-end tourism development and Albania's EU membership ambitions . Officials have framed the investment as a transformative economic boon that will create jobs and put Albania on the map for luxury travelers . The project was first publicly announced in December 2024, drawing criticism from citizens and environmental organizations even then .

Rama has denied being the "Godfather" of Albania after weeks of anti-corruption protests and publicly accused the movement of devolving into violence, calling it "the old movie of strife and violence" .
