Casualties and Missing Persons

The human toll is catastrophic and still rising. As of the latest reports, at least 1,450 people have been confirmed dead . This figure surged over the first four days: from 164 on June 24, to 589 on June 26, to over 1,430 by June 28 . More than 3,150 people have been injured .

Perhaps most alarming is the number of unaccounted individuals. Officials report that nearly 50,000 to 51,000 people remain missing . Acting President Delcy Rodríguez declared a state of emergency and warned the death toll would rise considerably as rescue teams continue searching rubble . National Assembly leader Jorge Rodríguez confirmed that hundreds remained trapped and that the number of missing was in the tens of thousands . The final casualty figure could be substantially higher than the confirmed count .

The USGS PAGER system estimated a broader range of $4.7 to $8.7 billion . The economic loss could reach up to 7% of Venezuela's entire GDP .

The Ongoing Aftershock Crisis

The danger is far from over. A series of significant aftershocks has kept rescue crews on edge and complicated search operations:

• A 4.9 magnitude aftershock struck off the northern coast on Friday, June 26 .
• A 5.6 magnitude earthquake hit off the Aragua region on Saturday, June 27, adding to the challenges facing rescue teams .
• A 4.8 magnitude tremor was also recorded .

Government officials reported that the region experienced more than 430 aftershocks in the days following the initial quakes .

International Rescue Efforts

United States:

• Dispatched two Indian Air Force C-17 Globemaster aircraft carrying a 41-member Army medical team, a field hospital unit, two BHISHM Cubes (Bharat Health Initiative for Sahyog Hita and Maitri, rapid emergency medical support systems), and over 35 tonnes of relief supplies including medicines and medical equipment .
