EASA Orders Urgent Wing Crack Inspections on 16 Airbus A380s

On June 22, 2026, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) published Emergency Airworthiness Directive (EAD) 2026-0119-E, effective June 24, 2026, requiring urgent special detailed inspections (SDI) of the wing mid-spars on 16 early-production Airbus A380s. Regulators concluded that cracks found during earlier inspections "could compromise the structural integrity of the wing" .

Which Aircraft Are Affected?

The directive applies to A380-841, A380-842, and A380-861 variants with the following 16 manufacturer serial numbers (MSNs): 30, 42, 55, 56, 105, 142, 184, 187, 190, 202, 203, 208, 209, 227, 228, and 234 .

• Emirates operates 15 of the affected aircraft .
• Qantas operates the remaining 1 aircraft .

Only a small fraction of the roughly 120–130 A380s in service are covered, and no in-service incidents related to wing structural integrity have been recorded .

Inspection and Repair Requirements

The directive mandates special detailed inspections (SDI) of the wing mid-spars — the structural beams inside the wing that carry aerodynamic loads during flight . Deadlines vary by aircraft:

• 5 aircraft (all operated by Emirates) must be inspected before their next flight .
• The remaining 11 aircraft must be inspected within 25 flight cycles .

If any cracks are discovered during inspection, operators must contact Airbus for approved repair instructions and complete the repair before the aircraft can return to service .

How Airlines Responded

Emirates stated it will begin inspections within 48 hours of the directive and comply fully with the airworthiness directive. The airline confirmed it is working closely with Airbus and EASA to complete the required checks .

Qantas has confirmed its single affected A380 will undergo the mandated inspections . No further public statement beyond compliance has been issued.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has also listed the EASA directive as current and applicable in the UK .
