Supported Services

AWS brought a broad set of core services to the Hanoi Local Zone from day one :

• Compute: Amazon EC2 with C7i (compute-optimized), M7i (general-purpose), and R7i (memory-optimized) instances.
• Storage: Amazon S3 One Zone-Infrequent Access (S3 One Zone-IA), Amazon EBS Local Snapshots, and EBS volume types including gp3, gp2, io1, sc1, and st1.
• Containers and Orchestration: Amazon Elastic Container Service (ECS) and Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS).
• Networking: Amazon VPC, Application Load Balancer, and AWS Direct Connect.

Notably, the Hanoi Local Zone is one of the first AWS Local Zones in Asia Pacific with support for Amazon S3 One Zone-IA, giving customers a native way to store data locally within the zone .

Latency Benefits

The Local Zone is designed for single-digit millisecond latency by placing selected AWS infrastructure directly in the Hanoi metropolitan area . This makes it suited for latency-sensitive applications such as real-time gaming, media content creation, live video streaming, engineering simulations, augmented and virtual reality, and machine learning inference at the edge .

Regulatory and Industry Impact

• Data Residency: The zone enables organizations to store and process data in Vietnam, helping meet local data residency and compliance requirements . Customers can use S3 One Zone-IA and EBS Local Snapshots to keep backups and selected data within the country.
• Industry Use Cases: AWS highlighted telecommunications workloads that process subscriber data locally, and healthcare workloads that must keep medical imaging and patient data within Vietnamese borders .
• Compliance: AWS stated workloads in the Local Zone can leverage the company’s broader compliance program, which supports 143 security standards and compliance certifications globally .
• Pricing: The zone follows standard AWS pay-as-you-go, on-demand pricing with no upfront investments or long-term contracts .

Broader Global Context

The Hanoi Local Zone joins more than 30 AWS Local Zones operating across metropolitan areas worldwide . In 2026, AWS also launched a new Local Zone in Istanbul, Türkiye, alongside the Hanoi location . Prior to this launch, AWS already operated two Edge Locations in Vietnam (Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City) for content delivery use cases .

Related Developments

• Direct Connect: In December 2025, AWS opened its first Direct Connect location in Vietnam at the CMC Tower in Hanoi, offering dedicated 1 Gbps, 10 Gbps, and 100 Gbps connections with MACsec encryption on higher-speed ports .
• Long-term commitment: AWS described the Hanoi Local Zone as a milestone in its support for Vietnam’s digital transformation and local cloud adoption .
• Government Support: Vietnam’s Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Pham Duc Long, welcomed the investment, saying it affirms Vietnam’s position as a rapidly developing digital hub in Asia .

Quote from AWS Leadership

"Vietnam is one of the most dynamic digital economies in Southeast Asia, and its builders are moving fast. The AWS Local Zone in Hanoi puts world-class compute and storage where it matters most: closer to their customers, making sure Vietnamese organizations have what they need to build, scale, and compete without compromise." — Jeff Johnson, Managing Director, ASEAN, AWS
