The chances of setting a new global temperature record have increased dramatically. El Niño events, characterized by warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific, typically boost global temperatures, making the year following their onset a prime candidate for new all-time highs . The WMO had already noted in early 2026 that the planet was transitioning from a La Niña phase to a neutral state, with most models forecasting the emergence of El Niño conditions by boreal summer or autumn .
The Arctic continues to be a hotspot of climate change, warming much faster than the global average—a phenomenon known as Arctic amplification. The WMO update projects that Arctic temperature anomalies will remain significantly elevated over the next five extended northern hemisphere winters (November–March) .
