One of the hospital’s main goals is to promote its upcoming Proton Therapy Center as a regional hub for advanced cancer treatment.
Proton therapy is a form of radiation therapy that uses proton beams to target tumors with high precision, reducing radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.
The proton therapy facility at TVGH is designed as a national‑level center in central Taiwan. According to the hospital’s introduction, the facility will initially include two proton therapy treatment rooms and multiple photon therapy rooms, supported by advanced imaging technology such as spectral CT and MRI simulators to improve treatment accuracy.
The outreach to Canada is partly strategic because Canada historically has had limited access to domestic proton therapy facilities. In the past, Canadian patients often needed to travel abroad—frequently to the United States—for this specialized treatment.
TVGH officials suggested that Taiwan could provide an alternative referral destination with comparable technology but lower treatment costs.
TVGH is also promoting Taiwan as a destination for high‑quality yet comparatively affordable medical care.
The hospital established its International Medical Service Center in 2007 to support overseas patients. The center manages medical travel coordination and serves more than 10,000 annual visits from foreign residents and international patients.
Through its Canadian outreach, the hospital emphasized services designed to simplify cross‑border care, including:
These systems are intended to make it easier for patients abroad to obtain specialized treatments in Taiwan.
Supporting Taiwanese communities abroad was another key objective of the Canadian visit. The delegation held community seminars and promoted telemedicine services that allow overseas patients to consult with doctors in Taiwan before traveling for treatment.
TVGH’s telemedicine program enables eligible Taiwanese nationals living overseas to receive remote consultations, diagnosis guidance, and follow‑up care. Patients or family members can contact the hospital’s Telehealth Center to schedule consultations and receive instructions for accessing services.
The telehealth system is designed to extend hospital care beyond Taiwan, enabling pre‑treatment consultations and post‑treatment monitoring without requiring continuous travel.
Taken together, the outreach strategy aims to create a full care pathway for international patients:
By combining academic partnerships, advanced cancer technology, telemedicine, and patient services, Taichung Veterans General Hospital is working to position Taiwan as a competitive destination for specialized medical treatment while strengthening ties with Canada’s healthcare and research communities.
