Gemini Gems Are Becoming Skills: Migration Date, Changes and What to Do

Google says it will begin automatically migrating Gemini Gems to skills on November 17, 2026. Users do not need to start the conversion themselves, and can continue using a Gem until it migrates. The notice announces the start of a rollout—not that every Gem will change on that date. 21

The key unknown is what the transition preserves. Gems and skills both save custom instructions, but the available information does not confirm that default tools, uploaded files, sharing permissions or eligibility will carry over unchanged.

What changes when a Gem becomes a skill?

Google describes skills as saved custom instructions that can be reused across tasks. Gemini Spark can apply a relevant skill in the background, or users can specify one for a task or workflow. 19

The practical difference is that a Gem is a customized Gemini experience users open to chat with, while a skill is designed to be reused across tasks, including when Spark applies it in the background. That does not establish that every Gem feature has a direct skills equivalent. 1519

What to do before migration

You do not need to manually convert Gems. While the Gems manager remains available, it is sensible to review each Gem’s instructions, note any default tool settings, and check which files and people have access. Gems support uploaded reference files, and sharing a Gem can also involve granting access to those files. 36

One report based on Google app code suggested that creating or editing Gems could stop on October 13, before the November migration. That was a reported indication—not a confirmed Google deadline—so don’t treat October 13 as established policy. The later migration notice says Gems will begin converting on November 17 and remain usable until they migrate. 2124

Who can use skills—and what’s still uncertain?

Google’s current skills help information lists requirements including being at least 18, using a personal Google Account, and turning on Keep Activity. It also lists Google AI Pro or Ultra in the US and Ultra in other countries as eligible plans; skills are currently available in Gemini Spark. 1933

Gems have been available to free users, while current skills eligibility is more limited. Google’s migration notice, as reported, does not explain what happens to a free user’s Gem if that person does not meet the skills requirements. The help information describes skills and their requirements, but that report did not establish a workaround or a date when creation would be available to every eligible account.
