Gemini is arriving in Google Maps on Apple CarPlay, bringing conversational voice queries to the in-car navigation display. The rollout began in the U.S. on October 21, 2026, and is also expanding globally, though some drivers may wait a few days for it to appear.

How to open Gemini in CarPlay
Start navigation in Google Maps on the CarPlay display, then tap the Gemini icon on the right edge of the screen. You can ask a question in everyday language and follow up without treating each query as a separate search.

The rollout is gradual, but available reports do not explain the technical reason for the timing or give a complete schedule by country. An updated Google Maps app may be needed for the icon to appear.

What drivers can ask
Gemini is designed for questions that combine place-finding and route planning. In a Google Maps example, a driver asks for a Seattle park known for skyline and Space Needle views, then follows up about weather, crowds, and a route that avoids tolls. A separate report identifies the example destination as Kerry Park.

Drivers can also ask for information about places, request route suggestions, look for stops such as food or fuel, and report traffic disruptions by voice.

What’s different from using Maps on an iPhone
The notable change is where the conversation happens: Gemini is now accessible within the Google Maps navigation experience on the CarPlay screen. Earlier reporting described Google’s voice assistant as available in Maps navigation when using an iPhone directly, but not through CarPlay.

Reports also describe Apple’s iOS 26.4 support for third-party conversational voice apps as part of the context for the CarPlay launch. They do not establish the precise technical mechanism Google Maps uses to integrate Gemini.

How this fits Google’s other Gemini features
This is an expansion to another in-car interface, not Gemini’s first appearance in automotive navigation: Google had already brought Gemini to Android Auto, and Gemini navigation was reported on Android and iOS phones the previous year.

It is also distinct from Ask Maps, a separate conversational Google Maps feature announced for Android and iOS in March 2026.

Another separate rollout began on Android Auto on October 20, 2026: Gemini Personal Intelligence can draw on information from Google apps such as Gmail, Calendar, Maps, and Photos to personalize responses. Google said support for cars with Google built-in would follow in the coming months. That Personal Intelligence rollout is not the same as Gemini navigation in CarPlay.
