Google is bringing Gemini’s custom instructions and background-agent features into a more unified interface. Gems are giving way to reusable Skills, while Spark is available as Task mode beside Chat. The change simplifies where these tools live, but it is a phased transition—not a simultaneous rename or a complete feature-for-feature swap.

What changes in Gemini
The new interface puts a Chat/Task switch beside the prompt box. Chat remains the place for regular conversations; Task opens Gemini’s background-agent workflow. Google says existing tasks and schedules remain available through the updated interface.

Skills bring saved instructions into conversations rather than keeping each custom assistant as a separate destination. You can select a Skill from an active chat using @, according to Gemini’s help materials.

Skills versus Gems
Gems were custom assistants configured for particular uses. Skills are reusable sets of instructions that can be combined: for example, a writing-style Skill can be used alongside a brand-guidelines Skill in the same task.
16
Skills are based on the open, Markdown-based SKILL.md format. Google says that format lets people bring Skills they created on other platforms into Gemini and Workspace apps. That describes portability of the files; it does not establish that Skills automatically sync between the Gemini app and Workspace.

There are still feature gaps. Google says sharing Skills and adding reference material from Drive and Gemini notebooks are planned additions; Skills can already include local reference files such as text documents, PDFs, and images.
5 Separate reporting lists Canvas, Deep Research, Guided Learning, and video and music generation among the features not yet supported with Skills, so users who depend on those workflows should test before switching.

How the Gems transition is scheduled
Google’s updated announcement says Skills began rolling out in the Gemini app on October 13, 2026, while the rollout to Workspace Studio and Workspace apps was delayed.

The official transition guidance gives these broad timelines for Gems: November 2026 for personal Google accounts, March 2027 for Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit accounts, and June 2027 for Workspace education accounts.
14 Reporting identifies November 17 as a personal-account transition milestone, but Google’s help page describes the personal transition by month rather than promising that date as a universal removal deadline.

If you rely on a Gem, keep a copy of its instructions and reference materials, then review and test the replacement Skill before depending on it. Google’s transition guide says converted Skills may need review and activation, and its education guidance says draft Skills must be manually activated.

What Spark’s move to Task means
Spark is Google’s background agent; Task is the label for accessing that workflow from the Chat/Task switch. Google’s help page explains the rename and says existing tasks and schedules remain available. Some Google help materials still use the Spark name, so both terms may appear in documentation during the transition.

Tasks can run in the background and use supported connected apps and services. Google’s help materials require Keep Activity to be on and list the European Economic Area, Nigeria, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom as unavailable regions.
19 Google also documents a limit of 15 running tasks at a time; a schedule will not run if that limit has been reached.
29
Google’s available help material lists Google AI Ultra for Spark access, while eligibility and rollout can change. Check the current requirements shown in Gemini before planning a workflow around Task mode.

The practical takeaway
For everyday Gemini users, Skills make saved instructions easier to reuse and combine without switching between separate custom assistants. For multi-step background work, Task brings Spark closer to the main chat—but access depends on account eligibility, region, and settings. Back up important Gem instructions, and verify that each Skill and Task behaves as expected before relying on it for consequential work.
