Gemini’s new overlay is expanding beyond Pixel
The redesigned overlay first appeared on phones with Gemini Intelligence, including the Pixel 11. 9to5Google reported on October 29 that the design was reaching other Android devices it checked, and Android Authority reported the following day that it was rolling out more broadly through a Google app update. 52

The refreshed look applies a heavy blur to the overlay’s input bar, making its pill-shaped edges less distinct. Reports also describe small specks and colorful swirls around the interface; Android Authority identifies the animation as part of Google’s Neural Expressive design language. 52

The reports describe a rollout, not guaranteed immediate access on every phone. They don’t establish a specific Google app version or confirm that force-stopping the app will enable the redesign. Updating the Google app is the documented route, but the sources do not give a reliable way to force availability. 34

Create and edit files inside Gemini chats
Gemini can generate, preview and edit files within a chat. Users can expand a file to full screen, type edits directly, highlight text to ask questions about it, or ask Gemini to refine the content. 51
Platform support differs by format:
- PDFs: Preview and editing are supported on both the web and mobile.
- Other file types: Documents, spreadsheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files and code are supported on the web only.

Google’s release information says the capabilities are available in supported languages, but the source excerpts do not provide a language-by-language list. 22

Two updates, with different limits
The overlay refresh changes Gemini’s appearance on Android; the file tools add a way to work with generated content inside chats. They are separate updates, and the overlay’s broader rollout does not mean every file format is available in the Android app. 34

Gemini Live has also received a separate Android interface update intended to make adding photos and files easier. That attachment change is distinct from the new file creation and editing workflow. 21
