How Samsung and Mistral AI Plan to Bring AI Into Chip Design and Manufacturing

Samsung Electronics and Mistral AI plan to develop language models tailored to semiconductor work, rather than rely solely on a general-purpose chatbot. Samsung says it will integrate Mistral’s AI services, including Mistral Large, across its chip operations and develop customized models that run on-premises.35 The goal is to make AI useful to engineers without moving sensitive work outside Samsung-controlled infrastructure.

Where the models could help

The collaboration is aimed at chip design, manufacturing-process optimization and engineering workflows.39 Reporting says the companies intend to combine design and manufacturing data from Samsung’s Device Solutions division with Mistral’s language-model technology to build AI suited to semiconductor tasks.10

That could mean helping engineers find relevant technical knowledge, examine results or automate parts of a workflow. Mistral documents the ability to connect its models to local tools, user-defined functions and APIs—a potential building block for applications tied to engineering systems.43 Those capabilities do not establish which specific tools Samsung has connected or how much work, if any, the models already perform in production.

Why run AI on Samsung’s infrastructure?

Chip designs, process knowledge and factory data are commercially sensitive. Running customized models on-premises could let Samsung apply AI to that information while retaining more direct control over where the models operate and how data is accessed. Samsung identifies on-premises deployment as part of the agreement.35 It is a deployment choice, not a guarantee against leaks, errors or misuse.

As semiconductor work generates complex designs and manufacturing information, an assistant that can retrieve and analyze relevant material could reduce time spent searching or reviewing it. Whether it improves decisions or factory performance will depend on the quality of its outputs and its integration into engineers’ work—not simply on the size of the model.

Why Mistral—and how the investment fits

Mistral offers open-weight as well as commercial models and presents sovereign AI as a priority.4812 That makes its approach relevant to Samsung’s stated plan for locally operated, specialized AI, though the sources do not specify which model weights or licensing arrangement Samsung will use. Mistral says it operates across 20 countries and supports more than 125 enterprises; those are company-reported figures, not measures of success in chipmaking.12

Samsung also led Mistral’s €3 billion Series D financing, which valued the company at more than €21 billion after the round. EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund and PSG Equity were co-leads. Mistral calls it the largest equity fundraising round completed by a European technology company.12 Reporting links the financing to further model development, computing capacity and infrastructure expansion.33

The partnership therefore joins an investment with a proposed industrial use for Mistral’s models. Its practical test is still ahead: the available announcements describe intended improvements, not measured gains in design speed, manufacturing yield, cost or customer outcomes.3539
