Microsoft is recasting Copilot as a place to start, create and delegate work across Microsoft 365. The redesign brings Chat, Office apps, app-building tools and AI agents into one experience. CEO Satya Nadella calls the ambition a “new OS for work,” but the announced product is a work interface—not a replacement for Windows.

What the new Copilot features do
- Home is the starting point, bringing Chat and Cowork together. Chat handles conversational requests; Cowork is for work users delegate to Copilot. Microsoft also says Word, Excel and PowerPoint are built into the experience as Office in Copilot.

- Code lets users build solutions with Copilot and includes tools to run them safely. Microsoft says it uses the same underlying technology as GitHub Copilot.

- Autopilot is described as a proactive, long-running enterprise agent. The aim is for it to continue delegated work without requiring a new prompt at every step.

Together, these features expand Copilot beyond a chat window: users can ask questions, work with Office content, build solutions and hand off longer-running tasks from one experience. That is the practical meaning of Microsoft’s “OS for work” framing; it does not mean Copilot controls the underlying operating system.

Availability: staged access, not a general release
Microsoft said Home and Code would begin rolling out through its Frontier early-access program in the weeks after the September 25 announcement. Autopilot was moving into private preview at the end of September. These are staged releases; the cited announcement does not establish broad availability for every feature.

The available rollout details do not give a firm general-release date for Office in Copilot. Access may therefore depend on the feature and preview program rather than simply having the redesigned app.

Billing: subscription plus usage charges
The reported pricing split separates everyday use from work performed by agents. A per-user subscription covers regular Copilot chat and Copilot use in Office, while Cowork, Code and Autopilot work are billed based on usage. The cited reports do not provide specific rates, so users and organizations should not assume the agent features are included at no extra cost.

What the Windows app teardown found
A teardown by Windows Latest reported that the Windows Copilot app is built around Chromium, with a small launcher executable rather than a native operating-system component. In other words, the app can provide a central interface for work without itself being an operating system.

That finding puts Microsoft’s phrase in context: “new OS for work” is a description of the role Copilot hopes to play across tasks and tools, not a literal claim that the Windows app replaces Windows. The teardown describes the app’s packaging and architecture; it does not, by itself, settle how much Copilot might eventually shape work across Microsoft products.
