Apple’s first foldable iPhone is not a direct remake of Microsoft’s Surface Duo. But it does return to a question Microsoft explored first with the Courier concept and then with Surface Duo: can a device small enough to carry become a useful two-up workspace when opened?
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 and opens book-style to a 7.6-inch inner display. Apple positions that larger surface for viewing, gaming, and multitasking, including two apps side by side and drag-and-drop actions such as moving a photo from Photos into Mail.

16 The important caveat is that this is an announced product, not a proven category winner. Its durability, software support from developers, and buyer appetite at this price remain to be tested.
The idea Microsoft had: a digital notebook in your pocket
Microsoft’s unreleased Courier concept anticipated a book-like device with two displays, touch and pen input, different apps on each side, and drag-and-drop between them. It was reportedly in advanced development before being cancelled in 2009.
47
Surface Duo brought a narrower version of that idea to market in 2020. It used two separate 5.6-inch OLED displays connected by a 360-degree hinge, making it well suited to keeping two distinct apps open—such as a browser on one side and notes on the other.
35
40
That distinction matters. Microsoft’s bet was not simply on a bigger phone screen; it was on deliberately separated workspaces. For some tasks, the divide was useful: each app had its own clear area. But the same physical divide became the product’s defining limitation whenever a single app, video, or document was meant to span both sides.
The key upgrade: a larger canvas without a permanent gap
Surface Duo’s displays were separated by bezels and a hinge gap. Microsoft’s own developer guidance acknowledged that an app spanning the two screens had a seam where content could not render. Reviews found that the gap and bezels undermined full-screen video and other single-canvas experiences.

Apple’s approach is a conventional book-style foldable: it opens to a 7.6-inch inner display rather than asking a single app to work across two physically separated panels. Apple says the inner screen is designed as a large canvas for content and multitasking.
8
That changes the trade-off:
- For one large task: A continuous inner display is better suited to video, games, photos, documents, and a single expanded app.
- For two simultaneous tasks: Apple offers Split View, allowing two apps side by side, plus direct drag-and-drop between them.
8
16
- For changing contexts: Apple says the interface transitions across displays and orientations, while the phone can also be used in partially folded positions.
14

This is the clearest way the iPhone Duo improves on Surface Duo’s concept. It keeps the productivity benefit of seeing two things at once, but does not force every expanded experience to cross a visible hardware seam.
Software is as important as the folding screen
The original Surface Duo’s hardware drew attention for its thin design and hinge, yet reviews repeatedly highlighted rough software behavior. Critics also cited dated hardware, an inadequate single camera, and no dust or water resistance on the first-generation model.

Apple’s advantage is less about inventing multitasking than integrating it into an existing iPhone software environment. The iPhone Duo runs iOS 27, and Apple is building its foldable interactions around Split View, orientation-aware layouts, and drag-and-drop between apps.
16
That does not guarantee every app will be excellent on day one. Foldables still depend on developers treating the expanded display as a meaningful layout rather than a stretched phone screen. But Apple enters with an established mobile ecosystem and an explicit system-level workflow for using the larger display.
Why the “Duo” name feels ironic
The name has prompted jokes because Microsoft’s Surface Duo was the most recognizable recent device carrying the word, and Microsoft stopped after two generations. The original model arrived in 2020; Surface Duo 2 followed in 2021, and the line is now a discontinued legacy platform.
34
35
Yet Microsoft does not own the name—or its history. Apple used PowerBook Duo for a family of ultraportable laptops beginning in 1992, and it later sold the MagSafe Duo Charger.
51
54 In that context, “Duo” is a natural description of a product built around paired modes or components, even if the timing makes the Surface comparison unavoidable.
What Apple addresses—and what it does not
The iPhone Duo appears designed to answer several of Surface Duo’s most visible shortcomings:
- A single expanded workspace: The 7.6-inch foldable inner display avoids the permanent gap that disrupted spanned apps and video on Surface Duo.
8
40
- Built-in multitasking: Split View and drag-and-drop make the two-up workflow a system feature rather than an experience dependent on uneven dual-screen optimization.
16
- A more complete phone proposition: Surface Duo’s original camera, specifications, and reliability-related omissions were recurring review complaints.

Still, Apple has not solved the hard questions merely by announcing a foldable. A $1,999 starting price places Duo above conventional flagship phones, and real-world hinge and display durability can only be assessed after broad use.

2 The device must also persuade people that its tablet-like workspace is valuable often enough to justify carrying—and paying for—a more complex phone.
A narrower lesson for Microsoft and Apple
It would be too broad to say Microsoft cannot make hardware. Surface and Xbox remain important product families. But the cancelled Duo line, alongside reports that Microsoft is pruning parts of its Surface portfolio and its confirmed exit from HoloLens hardware development, does indicate a more selective posture toward experimental consumer hardware.

24
Likewise, Apple has not simply copied an abandoned Microsoft product. Courier, Surface Duo, and iPhone Duo represent different hardware choices and software eras. The more useful lesson is that an early product vision can be right while its first commercial execution is incomplete.
Microsoft demonstrated the appeal of a portable, two-up workspace. Apple’s iPhone Duo applies that premise to a seamless larger display and integrated mobile multitasking. Whether that makes the idea mainstream will depend not on the resemblance to Surface Duo, but on whether the device proves durable, useful, and worth its $1,999 entry price.
