Gears of War: E-Day drew 20,374 concurrent players on Steam on October 2, during paid early access and ahead of its scheduled October 6 launch. That was nearly double Gears 5’s Steam peak, but it did not surpass every reported E-Day beta peak: a report citing SteamDB put a later beta session at 22,084 concurrent players.

The early-access result was 10,178 players above Gears 5’s peak and 6,043 above the 14,331-player beta figure. But it was 1,710 below the 22,084 peak reported for the later beta. So the accurate takeaway is that early access set a new high compared with Gears 5—not a new all-time high across the franchise’s reported Steam peaks.

Who could play before launch?
Early access began October 1 for Premium Edition and Collector’s Edition players, as well as Game Pass subscribers who bought the Premium Upgrade. A Game Pass subscription on its own was scheduled to provide access at the October 6 launch, not during the early-access period.

What the number does—and doesn’t—show
The 20,374 figure is a Steam concurrent-player peak, not a total audience count. E-Day is also available on Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, with Game Pass access at launch, so Steam data captures only activity on that platform.

Early Steam reviews were positive at the time of the store listing: 82% of 1,244 user reviews were positive. That is a snapshot of early reviews, not a measure of every player’s response.

The game’s premise may help explain why the series’ return attracted attention, but it cannot establish what caused the player peak. E-Day is a prequel about Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago during Emergence Day, set 14 years before the original Gears of War.

One piece of technical context is separate from the player count: a Digital Foundry report says the Series S version uses the console’s SSD as an additional memory tier alongside its 10GB of GDDR6. That describes a platform-engineering approach; it does not explain the Steam peak.
