Cursor’s launch of Origin was well timed for a developer community already questioning GitHub’s reliability. Origin debuted as GitHub experienced a worldwide service degradation lasting six hours and 42 minutes, with error rates near 20% across pull requests, Issues, and the API; archive and raw-file downloads reportedly approached 50% errors. 6

But Cursor’s strategy is more subtle than simply asking teams to migrate. Origin is designed to work alongside GitHub, giving developers a way to try Cursor’s AI-focused development workflow while keeping existing repositories and habits in place. 23

Origin covers GitHub’s core code-hosting workflows

Origin is intended to handle the basic tasks developers typically perform on a code-hosting platform:

• storing code in repositories;
• collaborating on shared codebases;

Why GitHub is still hard to dislodge

Cursor can use GitHub’s reliability concerns to attract attention, while its synchronization model lets teams evaluate Origin without cutting ties to the incumbent.

The open question is whether Cursor can turn that low-friction trial into durable platform adoption. Origin already mirrors the workflows developers expect from GitHub, but its longer-term differentiation depends on the agent-native features and app ecosystem that Cursor has announced without fully specifying. 28
