ASML’s Q2 commentary described customer demand for its lithography tools as extremely strong, while the company said it would expand capacity to address demand for systems used to make advanced AI chips. The result is a more constructive demand signal than a single customer order or one unusually strong quarter: customers are planning capacity further into the future, and ASML is responding before all potential demand has been converted into recognized revenue.
That distinction matters. Strong orders and customer commitments improve visibility, but they do not eliminate the risks around delivery schedules, fab construction, system acceptance, export restrictions or cancellations. A backlog is not the same as near-term sales.
ASML ended 2025 with a reported backlog of €38.8 billion, described as roughly 18 to 24 months of revenue visibility. Management also indicated that 2027 EUV capacity was close to fully covered by orders and that it had already received a significant number of orders for 2028 systems.
The company is planning to add about 30% to its 2026 low-NA EUV capacity for 2027, based on a planned 2026 output of roughly 65 systems. It is investigating another 30% increase for 2028. ASML also plans a 30% increase in immersion deep-ultraviolet capacity for 2027, with a further expansion under review for 2028.
These plans send two signals. First, demand is strong enough for ASML to commit capital and operational resources ahead of the full revenue cycle. Second, the company must execute a difficult expansion involving suppliers, manufacturing capacity, specialist labor and customer readiness. Capacity growth can support revenue and margins, but it also increases exposure if semiconductor capital spending weakens.
ASML’s strongest competitive advantage is its exclusive position in extreme ultraviolet lithography, a technology used in advanced chip production. TheStreet described the company as having an exclusive grip on EUV, while Reuters reported that its tools are required to produce advanced AI chips.
That position helps explain why ASML can command a premium valuation. Customers developing leading-edge capacity have few practical alternatives, and the value of the equipment rises when AI demand makes advanced manufacturing capacity strategically important.
The moat is powerful, but it is not a guarantee of uninterrupted share-price gains. ASML remains exposed to the spending decisions of a relatively concentrated group of major semiconductor customers, geopolitical restrictions on equipment exports and the timing of large system deliveries.
ASML shares fell from €1,621.20 to €1,505.40 over three sessions, a decline of about 7.1%. A market-value calculation put the reduction at approximately €45 billion. That figure describes the change in the value of shares outstanding; it does not represent €45 billion leaving the company’s operating business.
Reports also linked the broader decline in semiconductor and technology shares to risk-off conditions, higher bond yields and geopolitical concerns. In that context, the selloff appears more consistent with a change in market positioning and discount rates than with evidence of a deterioration in ASML’s Q2 orders or guidance.
Still, a macro-driven decline can become a fundamental one if higher rates or weaker risk appetite cause customers to delay capital spending. For ASML investors, the key question is not whether the stock can fall during a strong operating period—it clearly can—but whether earnings estimates remain intact when the market applies a lower multiple.
